The Maternity Bereavement Experience Measure (MBEM) aims to enable parents whose baby has died the opportunity to feed back about the care they received. This feedback will be used to inform best practice and service improvements locally.

In 2013 Sands asked bereaved parents to answer questions on the suitability of and the need for a feedback mechanism to capture their experiences of care. The 2013 survey received a fantastic response with over 700 completed surveys. The information from this survey has resulted in a project funded by NHS England with Sands, NHS England and the London Maternity Clinical Network working together to create an appropriate feedback mechanism to enable parents to inform service improvements.

This second survey, carried out in December 2016 received around 450 responses. It invited parents affected by the death of a baby to directly affect the design of this feedback mechanism.
