Stillbirth and neonatal death rates CMACE 2011

Stillbirth and neonatal death figures for 2009

CMACE (2011)  has pubished figures for 2009. Previously there were 10 stillbirths every day in the UK, and 7 neonatal deaths. The number of babies who are stillborn  now stands at 11 every day. The actual rate of stillbirth has also seen an increase to 5.2 stillbirths per 1,000 births in 2009 (from 5.1 in 2008).

We welcome the gradual decline in neonatal mortality rates since 2000. The number of babies dying in the neonatal period is now 6 babies dying every day. However, within the same period there has been a failure to impact on the stubbornly high rates of stillbirth.

17 babies dying every day in the UK is a national tragedy. Sands will continue to do all it can to raise awareness of stillbirth and newborn baby death, amongst the government, policy makers and the media, to ensure that those in positions of responsibility understand that doing nothing is not an option and that saving babies’ lives is a key health priority.
